Disturbing fashion lines history

Let’s talk about scandalous fashion lines! Fashion doesn’t have the greatest track record when it comes to blackface. Every year, it seems a new blackface controversy surfaces, with a new model at the center. This year, it was Gigi Hadid, who appeared on the cover of Vogue Italia sporting what some saw as a suspiciously dark tan. As BBC pointed out, many of Hadid’s followers were quick to point out her darkened appearance in the image, which was shot by Steven Klein. Others flat out called the image blackface. The criticism prompted the 23-year-old model to apologize. She shared a statement on Twitter along with a photo of herself post-shoot, with bronze makeup still on her face.

Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fall/Winter 1993 Collection, “Chic Rabbis” was what Jean Paul Gaultier labeled his Fall/Winter 1993 show because it was inspired by a trip to NYC where he encountered a group of rabbis leaving the New York Public Library. The designer said he loved the elegance of their dress with their hats and huge coats flapping in the wind but the collection came under fire for being culturally insensitive with specific complaints from Hasidic groups concerning female models in the show wearing traditionally masculine hairstyles and clothes.

Stefano Gabbana Defends Melania Trump, Time and time again, Melania Trump was spotted wearing Dolce & Gabbana looks at major events. And while other designers shy away from claiming responsibility when Melania wears their work, Stefano Gabbana did quite the opposite. He took to his Instagram account to praise the First Lady, a move that several fans of the brand were not happy with.

Already controversial to some extent for choosing to dress primarily men rather than focusing on women’s fashion like the majority of the industry, Rick Owens is known for its gothy, all-black aesthetic. Adopting something of an outcast position, the brand is beloved by its fans but, like its monochrome look tends to draw a black or white reaction from the public. You either love or hate Rick Owens. One of the most talked about fashion shows of recent years was the Owens Fall/Winter 2015 season, Sphinx, which featured male models wearing garments with cut-outs designed to show off their members. We should have known better than to expect anything else from the house: the fashion world knows that Owens doesn’t shy away from controversy, but the peen-peek stunt still erupted on the internet, spurring a frenzy of shocked posts. Of the collection, Owens explained that the focus put on the model’s members was an effort to incorporate a childish or juvenile aspect to the presentation.
