Hideaki Itsuno’s Devil May Cry 5 is ridiculously cool, stylish, sexy, and full-on cheesy, and as much as its narrative is about Nero’s path to becoming more than just dead weight, it’s a sequel that ties some loose ends together by being the action romp it deserves. One second, you will find yourself lost in a plot that is equal parts Hot Topic, Fury Road, and Showdown In Little Tokyo, and by the next, you’ll find yourself headbanging the night away as you hack and slash enemies with motorcycle swords. Dante is still Dante and the demons are still demons (for the most part), but DMC5 slays at upending the traditional norms and stigmas of today by making a badass arcade gem feel like a theatrical masterpiece.

Blood and Truth offers all the thrills of life in London’s gangster underworld, with none of the increased life insurance premiums. The PSVR shooter makes the most of its immersive medium, from shootouts taking place in a DJ booth – complete with lasers and pyrotechnics – to small but immersive details like reaching to your chest for ammo before slotting it into your weapon. The special attention that developer SIE London Studio has put into motion capture and voice artists stops the cutscenes sliding to the bottom of the uncanny valley, and there are nice little breaks between all the firefights – like picking locks, climbing towers, or wrecking an art exhibit – to stop it all just feeling like a shooting gallery on steroids. “The new God of War from Santa Monica Studio is a masterful reinvention of a now-classic PlayStation series and, primarily, its lead character. Kratos went from being a killing machine driven solely by rage in previous games, to, well, a killing machine driven by paternal instinct and a promise made to his deceased wife. But even without being compared to his former self, Kratos’ newfound sensitivity and self-awareness are as effective as they are because of how well the character and his journey are executed in general. For fans, it’s great to witness the character’s pivot from yesteryear’s action darling to today’s loving father figure in disguise, but Kratos and the game he leads are simply excellent on their own terms.”

Mario Tennis started to feel predictable the last couple entries, but Mario Tennis Aces gives the long-running sports series a welcome shot in the arm. As ever, it’s a collection of the Mushroom Kingdom’s finest volleying back and forth on cartoonish courts, but the new special shots shake things up. See, the special shots bring a new strategic element to the proceedings, as a well-placed slam can literally break the opponent’s racquet. But if they manage to block it, then you’ve wasted a heap of your energy for nothing. It really adds a lot to the game, plus a neat single-player adventure helps deliver some extra fun outside of the thrilling multiplayer showdowns. Read extra details on https://thedawnofgames.com/.
