With headlines like these, it’s tough to deny the popularity, growth, and influence of esports. Now that esports has everyone’s attention, colleges and universities across the country now believe that esports will play a crucial role in their identities. So in addition to developing a formal esports program, most colleges plan to offer highly coveted scholarships as an investment in the growth of their student bodies and programs.

The National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) is a nonprofit membership association organized by and on behalf of its member institutions. What began on July 28, 2016 with just a handful of member schools has grown into organization that supports more than 94% of the 130+ schools with esports programs. NACE, which also supports more than 3,000 student athletes, offers more than $15 million in scholarships and aid. Funded by Fresno State President Joseph I. Castro and administered via Student Involvement, the program is housed within the Student Recreation Center, which has six console stations equipped with a 50″ Monitor, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. Competitive ladders will be offered in the coming months. Currently, the program is seeking a coach, area manager, production manager, and varsity players. Tryout information is to be announced. The esports industry is a phenomenon that shows no sign of slowing down. Professional sports tournaments are filling huge stadiums worldwide, while millions of viewers tune in at home to watch the best players battle it out in their favorite games. As more investments are made, sponsorship budgets increase and more developers push an esports agenda, the industry continues to climb from strength to strength – even sporting giants such as Formula 1, FIFA and the NFL are getting involved.

New York Excelsior also made a positive start, going 2-0 with wins over Boston Uprising and Washington Justice and the other team with two wins from two is expansion team Hangzhou Spark who produced two fine displays to beat the hapless Shanghai Dragons and fellow expansion team Los Angeles Valiant in their two games. A number of teams have a 1-0 record after playing just one game in the opening week including several expansion teams, Paris Eternal, Vancouver Titans, Toronto Defiant and Chengdu Hunters. Six teams have a 1-1 record, Atlanta Reign, San Franscisco Shock, Boston Uprising, Seoul Dynasty, Los Angeles Gladiators and the Dallas Fuel. While seven teams are still waiting for their first victory, Guanghzhou Charge, Los Angeles Valiant, Washington Justice and Florida Mayhem, who have all lost just the one game.
