China’s tropical rainforests were once huge. Today, however, most of China’s influence on forests exists solely on the consumption side. At home and away, China are world leaders in illegal logging operations. China’s tropical rainforests have declined by at least 67% in the last 30 years. Abroad, Chinese firms have actively cleared huge areas of rainforests as well as sponsoring large agriculture, infrastructure and oil and mining development projects throughout the world’s rainforests. Some good news is that Hainan Island, the country’s smallest and southernmost province, is home to the largest and best-preserved tropical rainforest in China. Much of the area is now protected and is seldom visited, even though 25 million tourists visit the island each year.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and rainforest region are two Costa Rican reserves in the Puntarenas and Alajuela provinces. It’s termed a “Cloud Forest” because clouds hover around the upper canopy before condensing onto the leaves of trees. This creates a cycle of moisture that characterizes all rainforests, this life-giving condensation that allows for a large amount of biodiversity. As a fun fact, Monteverde has incredible wildlife – over 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, and 1,200 species of amphibians and reptiles. It’s also one of the few habitats left that support all six species of “big cats”: jaguars, pumas, margays, ocelots, oncillas, and jaguarundis. Travel to Costa Rica to walk on the tops of clouds and to see this stunning landscape!

Sundarbans Researve Forest: The Sundarbans Researve Forest is within the Bangladesh area and covers 40 percent of India. The entire land area covered by the forest is 10,000 km2. It is one of the natural mysteries of the word because of its location in the Padma, Brahmaputra, and Meghna river basins. Mangrove trees dominate the forest and it also serves as a habitat to the Bengal tiger. Monteverade Forest: Located in Costa Rica, the forest is named after Monteverade and covers an area of more than 10,500 hectares. Tropical green vegetation covers most of the area with nearly 2,500 plant species, 120 amphibian and reptilian species, thousands of insects, 400 varieties of birds, and 100 different mammals. The forest also has natural rivers, medicinal herbs, streams, and waterfalls and because of these natural resources it’s always referred to as “the virgin forest.”

The El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rain forest in the national forest system. At nearly 29,000 acres, it is one of the smallest in size, yet one of the most biologically diverse of the national forests hosting hundreds of animal and plant species, some of which are found only here. Planning a Visit to El Yunque National Forest? You can find information on the trails, recreation areas and services currently available. Trails to the ever popular La Mina waterfalls remain closed for repairs at this time. Here’s a map of areas currently open in the Forest. See extra information on El Yunque rain forest exploration blog. The deepest experiences were when I was ordained as a Theravada Buddhist monk in the TKAM Monastery in Boulder Creek, under the guidance of Taunpulu Sayadu from Burma. But that another long story … These monks make a vow to live and practice in the forest – following the Buddhas teachings and example for over 2,500 years!
