Mahjong is a very old table game that was created in China. As with any quality product it was adopted by many cultures around the globe. Evidence from Chinese researchers claim that contemporary Mahjong originated from Kiangsu, Anhwei near Shanghai around mid- to late 19th century, while others still contest the origin of the game even today. Mahjong isn’t very well know prior to 1905 in the rest of the world, however during the early 20th century it gradually spread to the Western world. By 1920, Mahjong spread in the states feverously.
The expatriate population of Shanghai picked up the game in the cafes that they frequented and brought it back to their home countries. In Japan, Mahjong clubs formed in the early part of the century and the rules in that country remain close to the classical game. There are 136 tiles in a set which includes 36 characters, 36 circles, 36 bamboos (each of these suits are divided into numbers one to nine), 16 Wind tiles and 12 Dragon tiles.
If your eyes get blurred by all the similar tiles in original mahjong, you can try this variation of the game. In this game, the symbols of the original tiles are replaced by cute signs of a coffee shop such as a cup of coffee, cookies, a cup of tea, etc. This refreshment saves you from trying to identify all the tiles of the former game. Moreover, instead of showing you all tiles, there are some pieces hidden, and only when you eliminate some tiles will they be revealed. Source: Jogos 123.
Although an American anthropologist by the name of Stewart Cullen wrote a paper mentioning the game of Mah Jong in 1895, it was not fully introduced into American culture until the 1920s. The company Abercrombie & Fitch was the first company to sell Mah Jong sets. It became such a resounding success in New York that one of the co-founders of the company, Ezra Fitch, decided it would be a good idea to dispatch a number of emissaries to cities in China to buy up all the Mah Jong sets they could find. In their years of production, Abercrombie & Fitch ended up selling around 12,000 sets of Mah Jong.
